90 Second Film Challenge project progress

Project Progress - Bristol Wireless 90 Second Film Challenge

Filming so far completed: Bristol Wireless office and ECC. Filming still to do: Ronnie and the aerial tower.

Timescale: Ronnies interview: ell is editing in london next week, back from the 4th so setting up ronnies interview for that week would be ideal. a BW person would be good to come along. Aerial: ideally filmed by the 17th oct at the latest

Editing: ideal timescale for editing: within the week of the 17th - 23rd Ben has made good progress on cinelerra. Ell and Ben will edit together, Ells editing time budget is 2-3 days max. If it looks like this cant be done, other software may have to be used. other tasks: ell will log the footage, and compress it and submit the final film and paperwork to the Challenge. Ben will do the transitions.

17.08.05 - We met today to discuss ideas for the film, and plan production.

Aims outlined:

  • To use open source software in the production of the film

  • To collaborate activley on the project: Bristol Wireless and Fluffy Logic will share skills and technology, and putting creative time and work into the film

  • To outline three key elements of Bristol Wireless' activities: ADSL, Community Wireless & LTSP

Film concept:

Showing how the internet signal provided by Bristol Wireless connects up real people and real places in Bristol.

The film will be made in the area where Bristol Wireless is based: St Werburghs. It will be based around showing a working example of each of the elements above in a specific location. These elements will be connected by 'transitions' that look and feel like a web signal travelling quickly across the area.

Film elements:

  • Very short interviews (Ronnie Corbett, ECC) involving someone from BW crew

  • Narration

  • Visual transitions: e.g. in the style of digital zooms from one still image to another (BW has software for that), or stop frame, also have the nice map in the office with coloured pins in

  • Locations: Bristol Wireless workshop, Princess Royal Gardens and Ronnie Corbett to show LTSP, Easton Community Centre to show DSL, and rooftop with aerial to show Wireless

Bristol Wireless 90 second film structure and aprox timeline

00:00 - 00:15 - Front title, opening to Location 1: inside the Bristol Wireless workshop. People working, close-ups of interesting tech. Narration begins introducing Bristol Wireless: where we are and what it is.

Transition 1: with narration continuing underneath

00:15 - 45 - Location 2: Princess Royal Gardens, we see the box working, Ronnie says a few words about how the project is working and what effects it has.

Transition 2: with narration under about where we are going next

00:45 - 00:65 - Location 3: Easton Community Centre, we see the box working, a few words about BW activities here

Transition 3: " " "

00:65 - 00:85 - Location 4: Rooftop with aerial, BW person shows areas of wireless activity from BW

Transition 4: no narration

00:85 - 00:90: Location 1 again: fade out, End credits & contacts, etc.

Questions:

  • Do we want a sound effect / music with the transition? Who do we know who can make one? Make it around 5 -7 secs long (tbc) ?
  • Who from BW wants to be in each location showing each element? (proposal, Ben and Matt to be involved)

Timescale:

Filming: sept 05 Production: sept 05

  • To Do:*

  • FL needs to meet and discuss some technical aspects of the project

  • Bristol Wireless are contacting Princess Royal Gardens and ECC to take part in a filming day for September when the ECC is more active again.
