The Project
Your computer is the first stage in the project being organised by Bristol Wireless with the help of SABREE (Springfield and Bannerman Education Extra) to provide all children in the reception class at Bannerman Rd School with access to computers in their home. Their parents/carers will be able to get information from the school via a this web page. They will also be able to communicate with teachers and each other and download more educational resources. We will be visiting all recipients in the next few months to connect your computers to our wireless network, please bear with us.
The Computer
All the computers for this project were kindly donated by the Institute of Physics Publishing based in Bristol. We have installed the MEPIS (a version of Linux) on all the machines. We use this software because we think Free and OpenSource software is the best option. MEPIS and other types of Linux are an alternative to MS Windows. The computer is yours to keep from today.
What is MEPIS?
MEPIS comes with lots of useful software. In fact it includes every sort of software package you might require from a computer! A choice of office applications, a full range of internet applications, lots of games and support for thousands of printers, cameras and other devices. MEPIS stands for Managerial Educational and Personal Information Systems.
In addition, we have also installed lots of educational software for young people, we suggest you let them try out GCompris; you will find the icon on the desktop after you have logged in.
