Bannerman Road School

Intro

Bannerman Rd is a primary school situated in the Lawrence Hill ward, which by most indices is one of the most deprived in the city. Bristol Wireless have 40 high specification computers we will donate to the families in the reception year of 2004. We have secured funding for 40 wireless access points which will allow the children to access the school network from home. This wireless network will open up the possibility of teachers setting ICT homework. It will allow parent-teacher communication as well as parent-parent and pupil-pupil communications. We will develop a community portal in co-operation with CISC and the parents and teachers at Bannerman Rd which will enrich the learning experience of Bannerman Rd.

Aims

The specific aim of the project is to achieve a measurable effect on educational attainment by providing each of the pupils in the reception year with a powerful learning resource in the form of a computer and access point for the home. We will create a multilingual online community which is able to support new computer users. The ultimate aim of this project is to provide a model and software which can be used by other primary schools.

Who will benefit?

  • 40 families will receive a free computer and training in how to use that computer. 80% of children who will benefit have English as a second language.
  • We expect that the computer network will help to facilitate the friendships and networks which normally form amongst the parents of a school year. We also expect that the calendar and intranet will be used by them and the school to communicate, leading to a more integrated and well-informed school community.
  • We expect that the written English and maths scores in year two SATs will improve.

40 children will receive a free high specification computer and wireless hardware; it is anticipated that the computers and educational resources that they make available will also be used by parents and siblings. All of the parents will receive some free instruction on how to use word processing packages and the wireless intranet interface.
