This page is about getting out LTSP laptop and suite to boot from a 2.6 kernel and attach itself to the LTSP server.
We did it!
Kind of, the build is still a bit flakey, with booting happening correctly 5 out of 6 times. Probably just needs some work on the linuxrc script (now actually the init script).
Likely Issues (now resolved)
The issues listed below are likely to be a headache.
PCMCIA changes
The old method of handling PCMCIA devices has changed. This will all be built into the custom kernel.
linuxrc
This will need to be modified for the new kernel. This looks like the major problem.
Different systems
The old 2.4 LTSP kernels used DEVFS, the new one uses UDEV and SYSFS. Hopefully this will be the only change, we just need to mount different things in the linuxrc.
GCC compatibility problems
Will the binary tools on the wireless-LTSP disk run properly with the new kernel, or do we need to re-compile everything from the ground up? Probably, but try without.
Stages to completion
- Prepare environment - how are we going to test this thing? (done)
- Compile new kernel - with correct modules built in (done)
- Fix up linuxrc (done - but not satifactory).
- Add pcmcia utils in to LBE (done)
