Linux DJing Applications

Audio applications for Linux have been making amazing progress in recent years and plenty of tools are now available for the Linux DJ, including:

  • DJplay - "a high-class live DJing application for Linux";
  • XMMS - a media player not unlike Winamp;
  • Oddcast - an audio streaming plug-in for XMMS;
  • Mixxx - a cool DJ mixer;
  • TerminatorX - provides hip-hop style "scratching" of WAV files
  • usw
  • httpAudacity - popular audio editing aplication.
  • httpArdour a multichannel digital audio workstation / application for Linux. Very similar to packages such as Protools and Cubase.

Audio streaming

If you're thinking of streaming audio content from your Technics, CD decks or other audio source, and want to use your Linux PC as an audio streamer to handle your broadcast, visiting httpIcecast is well worthwhile.

Other sound applications and specialist distributions.

  • httpPlanet CCRMA - a collection of RPMS that turn a computer running Fedora into a low-latency Audio Workstation.

  • httpDebian Multimedia is an apt repository that contains many sound and multimeida applications for debian.

  • httpStudio64 is a specialist audio distribution for x86 64bit hardware based on a Pure 64 port of Debian with specialist packages.

  • httpUbuntuStudio. Due to be launched in April 2007 this aims to be "a multimedia creation derivative of Ubuntu".

  • httpDyne:bolic]. A live CD distribution aimed at media activists and optimized for slower computers. It allows you to edit, create, broadcast and manipulate audio and video.

  • httpPure:Dyne a customization of dyne:bolic for realtime audio and video processing.
