For Printed Versions - Please check on admin wiki you are using latest Version before proceeding.

These instructions are designed for volunteers. You dont 'need' to do the post install configuration but it will make your machine look nicer.

Processing new machines

When bringing computers into the workshop add the asset numbers and details to the database here httphttp://localhost/bwdb/addEquipment.php?page=1

Put the computers under the desk that is labeled 'new machines'

When working on the machines use the desks to the left of the window (when facing window)

If you cannot copy the 'master' hard disk this is the Manual INSTALL;

As the computer starts up press F2 (or if that does not work look for other instructions to enter 'set up' maybe F1 or Delete)

Once you are in 'set up' change the 'boot sequence' so that the computer boots from the CD drive first

Put the mepis disk into the CD drive and restart.

Click the 'install me' icon that appears once the computer is fully loaded.(redscreen)

Choose'install mepis on hard drive'from the list on the left

click next

leave 1a and 1b alone

1c Choose 'auto install on whole disk' click next and confirm that it is 'OK format and use the entire disk(/dev/hda)formepis'-unless dual boot

make a cup of tea for everyone -or start another install

in 4.a leave install GRUB in MBR,

4b change install 2.6 kernel only, confirm it is OK to do so

5,Set the user password to 'changeme'

Set the root password to 'wireless' click next

6, change the computer name to mepis <next number in table> click next

untick 'ppp service for dialup etc etc'clicknext

8a change keyboard to 'UK' and locale to 'en_GB'

8b set the time, change timezone to 'Europe/London click next

click finish

restart the machine- press F2 (or whatever you did at the begining) to enter set up again and change it back to boot from the main drive.

Post Install

Once you have completed a Mepis install please complete the post install configuration. Start reading this page on the actual computer you are installing

apt-get install totem

apt-get install amarok

apt-get install wine

apt-get install rosegarden4

apt-get install dia

apt-get install blender

apt-get install gcompris

apt-get install openoffice.org (from testing)

the above programs can be given as a space delineated list i.e. apt-get install apt-listbugs totem amarok...

w32codecs:

go to httphttp://plf.acnova.com/ubuntu/plf/pool/non-free/w32codecs/

download w32codecs_20050412-1plf4_i386.deb and install with kpackage

  • Edit panel which is at the bottom of the screen (right click on it go to custom set size to 40, right click repeatedly untilyou have removed all appelets apart from clock, taskbar and system monitor, remove these application buttons K3b,kwrite,kontact,konquerer,desk top access by right clicking on them and selecting 'remove'

edit clock right click on it choose type'plain'-change size to 10 add visually informative buttons for web browser, Gimp, Ooffice, home, gaim. edit system monitor - right click on it go to preferences>colours select each colour and draw down the colour bar to make it less garish

  • changing desktop settings right click configure panel ( the tabs for the different sections are at the top) choose'enabletransparency' + add a nice background eg this one here:

  • Set Open office to save to word/ excel/ powerpoint format, turn off auto complete. (go tools>options go to load/save/general)

install the windoze version of firefox- download shockwave player

  • Edit 'home' directory (delete 'news' 'public-html' 'mail' both 'my checkbooks' 'smb4K') Add a 'zipped' file
  • Edit home/username/documents to remove everything
  • Edit menus (move all applications to the 'all applications' folder) add most used applications eg. scribus, kino, calculator, konsole, audacity to main menu
  • Write 'completed mepis install' in pencil on the case

Put the machine under the desk that says 'completed mepis installs'

If you find the machine is Junk then remove all useful parts and place it under the desk labeled 'junk'
