Music on the network?

I’ve recently moved back to Easton and I’m planning on getting myself a wireless card and joining the fun soon. But – to be cynical – all I see on the website, forum and mailing list is technical geek-speak. Surely there’s more to it than this? (Apologies, no offence to geeks intended.)

I’m a musician. Is anyone using the network for musical collaborations, broadcasts, or similar? I currently organise a monthly night (Sausage Time – see http://www.sausagetime.com) of live performance and other occasional gigs. If I were to do a similar kind of thing at the Chelsea Inn, making the sets available as MP3s over the network, possibly streaming them live if someone’s got the know-how, would that be a good idea? I know the area’s crawling with musicians. Could be a fundraiser in it.

We could definitely do a live broadcast over the network from the Chelsea Inn. It could also be possible to do so from the venue you normally use, provided they are willing to get an antenna on the roof.

They wouldn’t necessarily need an antenna on the roof. We could stream it from someones laptop with a portable antenna, if we got a good signal, or we could tunnel it through a broadband connection if the pub had one of those.

The usual venue is the Arc bar, in Broad Street – I shouldn’t think your signal gets that far, but correct me if I’m wrong. Don’t think they’ve got broadband.

According to http://www.andylaurence.co.uk/BWcoverage.jpg (which is estimated, and therefore not 100% accurate), it could be possible. Of course, it depends on how tall the building is. Short of it is "can you see Twinnell House from the roof there?"

I’d be surprised if we couldn’t organise a connection, even if it requires a mobile repeater.

    Cheers,
