Mepis install at BuildIT, the Park Knowle

Myself, Dez and 2 of his students went to the BuildIt project at the Park in Knowle on Monday afternoon to start the refurbishment of the IoPP donated machines earmarked for distribution in the Bannerman Road Project. There do not appear to be many current students on BuildIT (which has also just changed its name!), so the installs were down to us. There were a few problems which Dez has promised to write up.

The next visit is planned for Monday afternoon 1st November; it might be an idea to try and get the other machines from IoPP up there ready to install and get a big gang to try and get it all done in one afternoon. Volunteer here!

I’ll shove sthng on the Wiki "real soon now" (ie before Nov 1st!),,the main issue is some mobos cause a kernel panic & the way around is to use the failsafe install which works fine…

also, at least 2 boxes had hard drives that were too small for the /root partition install, there is a way round this but I couldn’t remember what it was. Of course the other way round is to change the hard drive and we have a box full of 8 to 10 GB at the lab.

*Quite a few machines kernel panicked on loading up SimplMepis 2004.3. The solution in the end was to choose the failsafe option from the boot options at cdrom startup.
*One machine’s hd was too small; the min. requirement is >2/5Gbytes I think – but most were ok.
*When going through the post install options, make sure you choose uk keyboard & gb locales (I think) for language settings.

I now have downloaded SimplMepis200.4, but not had a go at installing it on any machines yet, so I don’t know if the first issue is still extant or not.
