Business Meeting – March 8th at The Chelsea 6.30 – 8.30
Provisional Agenda for Business meeting on the wiki at http://docs.psand.net/twiki/bin/view/CLAN/ClanAgendaNextMeeting
All welcome, please attend, Bristol Wireless needs you :), several projects reaching critical stages.
Hi Sean, Paul Munday send me details of your meeting. I’d like to be there tonight to meet you all and scope out the possibility of hooking up with you on the St Paul’s Youth Promotion Radio Project. It’s a continuation of the Big Time radio project (outline attached) which I think Paul’s spoken to you about already. We’d like to broadcast out of the Malcolm X, be as low budget and self sustaining as we can be, and work with other internet and terrestrial radio. Looking forward to meeting you. best wishes, Sophie
Big Time Radio Project Outline
Project target group: 13-19 year olds
Duration of project: Radio Workshops: Big Time (festival for young people), Malcolm X Centre, 2,3,4, April 2004
4 day Restricted Service Licence Radio Station: July 27-30 Big Time event.
The Big Time will be putting together a radio project for young people between 13 and 19 for the two Big Time events which will be running in two phases, a training sessions/workshops at the Easter Big Time (2/3/4 April), and an RSL for July’s Big Time event (27-23 July). .
Easter Big Time
Easter Big Time will feature workshops in radio skills, aiming for each young person/group of young people to create a 30 second to 2 minute radio informational jingle/advert for Big Time by the end of the three days. Training will combine technical and journalistic skills and include:
Programme creation/production
Interview techniques
Editing skills
Use of audio editing software
Use of a mini disk recorder
Young people will work intensively with radio professionals throughout the three days.
Radio programmes created from this training will be broadcast at within the Malcolm X at the end of Big Time. They will also be made available on the internet and be broadcast on future RSLs including PowerJam in June.
Big time runs from 5 to 10pm on the 2 April, and 1-9.30pm on the
3rd and 4th. The sessions will be informal, a radio space being set up in the café area upstairs, with computer terminals and mini-disk players available. The first (evening) session is planned to consist of example programmes and a ‘brainstorming’ session for the young people, mapping out ideas for adverts. The 3rd and 4th will consist of sessions from 1-5pm in which young people gather material from Big Time, and begin to edit it on the pcs.
Summer Big Time
is also hoped that young people interested in radio will have future opportunities to participate in live radio broadcasts through the partnership agencies, fostering new talent and building confidence and skills within Bristol’s inner city youth, providing templates for such projects for other areas.
Dependent upon funding, the project aims to continue to Big Time in July 2004, with regular radio workshops/experience provided until July. Young people will be involved in planning and working within a four day live radio station, featuring both music and documentary programmes to coincide with the Big Time event.
Agencies Involved
The Radio Project will draw together the different agencies working with young people in radio in central Bristol, to work in partnership to support and train young people in this project. This would form a consortium which could take such projects and young people further to other radio projects and stations in future.
Organizations currently in discussion on this partnership are:
Ashley Youth and Play Partnership
Big Time Deasy Bamford
St Paul’s Youth Promotion Simbarashe Tongagara
Sophie Andrews
Joe Black
Bristol Wireless Matt/Paul
Commonwealth FM Carlton Romaine
CEED Media Centre Kevin Philemon
Basement Project Troy Transka
Channel Zero Rob Mitchell
BCC Youth Services Kassim Hamid
Somalian International Development Assn. Osman
Full Circle Judith Davis
Continuation of the Project
It is hoped that in
partnership with Bristol Wireless, and other radio projects, both terrestrial and internet, in Bristol, a localised internet project for the Ashley area will be developed. This will enable the work done to continue and provide an outlet for talent. The project will also focus on young people excled from school, as well as the wider experience of all ages in St Paul’s. We are focusing on low-cost, easily accessible formats, and currently in discussion with local community venues about a home for the project.

MATTERS ARISING
Bannerman Road – Education action zone contact is off long term. 40 computers donated by Institute of Physics (450MHz+, 128Mb, 20Gb+).
Install Fest – it’s not happened yet! To be arranged.
St Werburgh’s Community Centre – got the go ahead for a node to share their bandwidth, and LTSP in their lobby. Let’s do it!
Bristol University link – no progress there (university contact very busy).
TRAINING
—
Ben/Paul/Sean/Rich teaching. Chaotic! Physical access issues with the community centre. Attendees were very complimentary on the courses. Need a tutor and helper for each session, and help to build and move the PCs beforehand. We’ve lost the Thursday morning slot, but afternoons are better anyway. Nigel at ECC is going to suggest a time/date for the next course.
BACEN
Action plan to complete (info on Wiki – http://docs.psand.net/). Everything for the next 3 years will cost £240000!
FUNDING
—
Sean is posting possibles to the forum (http://forums.bristolwireless.net/) – more help needed! We are low on cash (£600 in the bank).
NEIGHBOURHOOD RENEWAL NETWORK
—-
10 computers need to be installed and connected to the network. All the kit is available, we need to get in there and install it. There is a budget for us to offer training (£600), and LinuxIT don’t seem to be offering it. We are making a profit on the boxes of almost £200 as they are cheaper now than when we specced them. This covers our costs of building the nodes. First to be installed on Wednesday at Robertson Road. Other dates to be confirmed.
COMMUNITY IT FESTIVAL
–
Digital Donation II, with demonstration of what the netw
ork is capable of. HP donantions possibly in the pipeline. Media expected to be in attendance. We need good examples of how the network works. "Statements" mailing list – could post for ideas there. 5th June is the date! Tuesday 23rd March 6:00-8:00 at the lab (and IRC) to discuss issues.
MEDIA FOCUS GROUP
—
Name change – Content Development Group.
AOB
—
Move meetings from the pub – there are rooms available for hire from the community centre (from £10/hour).
We need a skills matrix with who’s available when – perhaps a simple list on the Wiki.
NEXT MEETING
—
23rd March to discuss the demo day.
6th April for the next general meeting.
